The Art Director is in charge of the overall visual appearance and how a film communicates visually, stimulates moods, contrasts features, and psychologically appeals to a target audience. The Art Director makes decisions about visual elements used, what artistic style to use, and when to use motion.
Hi everyone and thanks for checking out this weeks Exposing the Crew short film!
Let’s music video (verb). This weeks ETC HIGHLIGHT focuses on the playful Art Direction taken in the musical short film Sunday Candy. (Written by Chance the Rapper) This weeks highlighted crew member, Drew Bender, had to choreograph this films artistic direction with the restrictions of a single stage, and the entire film being done in a single shot.
As the Art Director, Drew worked hand in hand with the films Production Designer, Amanda Brinton, to create the unique Broadway feel of the films visuals. On smaller indie projects, the crew positions “Production Designer” and “Art Director” can be used interchangeably. When both positions are filled, the Art Director is considered the right hand man of the Production Designer.
What caught my attention about the art direction was the teams ability to create multiple “locations”, or the feeling of multiple locations, all on one stage. This is a technique that is often utilized in the theater world, that we happily welcome in this stylized music video.
Thank you Drew Bender for helping create such a unique short film for our viewers this week.
We’d also like to thank Chance the Rapper, for his contribution and performance in this project. Make sure to check out his music at Chanceraps.com
Thank you for watching this week’s Exposing the Crew “EXPOSED” short film!
See You Next Tuesday,
Justin Jackola (Director at JJack Productions)
